Good morning from your local independent fresh produce company:

• Green Peppers, Cucumbers, Yellow Squash, and Zucchini are still in a “demand exceeds supply” situation with higher than normal prices. We see these markets backing off soon, however.
• With Tomatoes, Roma’s and Grape Tomatoes the opposite is true. Supply exceeds demand pushing prices down. Florida tomatoes are a great value now
• Avocado prices are remaining steady as we head to Super Bowl week
• Florida Strawberries continue to be excellent quality, but freezing temps in the growing areas are pushing prices up
• Excellent quality with low prices on Broccoli, Broccoli Crowns, and Cauliflower
• Chilean Red and Green Seedless Grapes are great quality and steady prices
• Melons are extremely limited due to lower supplies from Mexico and the Honduras

Recommendations for this week:
• Avoid dishes with Peppers, Cucumbers, and Squash, and substitute Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, and Potatoes
• Avoid fruit plates with Cantaloupe and Honeydews, and substitute Pineapples, Red and Green Grapes, Strawberries, Mangoes and Kiwi
• Avoid Blackberries, use Blueberries

We hope this is helpful, please let me know, thanks!

Good morning, welcome to winter, here’s some fresh produce news:

• Weather is improving in out west, with most temperatures returning to normal seasonal levels. This means good prices and great quality for Broccoli and Cauliflower. Consider salads, soups and side dishes with these tasty nutritious veggies
• Strawberry quality from Florida is outstanding. Rainy weather is limiting supplies pushing prices higher
• Southern Vegetables (Cucumbers, Green Peppers, Zucchini, Yellow Squash) have been limited and prices higher due to a recent cold snap in growing areas
• Melons (Watermelons, Cantaloupes, and Honeydews) are transitioning growing areas, quality is good, but prices are up
• Tomato prices (Rounds, Roma’s and Grapes) have backed off due to low demand. Look for prices to remain low for the immediate future

We hope you find this information useful and valuable. Please let us know how we can improve our communication to you.

Good Morning, presenting some tips for fresh produce:

• Florida experienced a freeze earlier this week that’s caused some prices to rise, affected is Green Peppers, Squash, Cucumbers, Green Beans, Hot Peppers, and Tomatoes
• Most dramatic: Hungarian Hot Peppers are scarce and very expensive
• Avocadoes are rising in price and will peak Super Bowl Sunday due to increased demand for popular guacamole dishes and dips
• Chilean Grapes have started right as California fruit is finishing, causing a supply that exceeds demand, lowering the price
• Big Potatoes (40-60ct, 14-16oz) are readily available, great deals can be had
• Green Cabbage is a great value, consider this when planning specials

Independent restaurant owners take note; your guests are bored with the same food served the same way in franchise restaurants. Now is the time to get them back with colorful, creative, unique dishes. Perhaps we can help! Please let us know….

We hope you had a great holiday, here’s what’s happening with fresh produce:

• Strawberries are very limited, with high prices and only fair quality…Berry quality will improve as the Florida crop begins harvesting, but we appear to be about a week away
• California Red and Green Seedless Grapes are finishing up with Chilean imports next to arrive for the Christmas season
• The price rise on California vegetables (lettuce, romaine, cauliflower, broccoli, and celery appeared to be short lived…prices on all items including pre-cut salads will be back to normal on beginning Monday…Crops are harvesting in Yuma, Arizona and the quality has been very nice
• Onions appear to be in good supply with steady prices…Idaho Potato market appears to be very steady
• Tomato prices are coming down as grower/shippers begin to harvest in more areas of Florida

Thanks again for the opportunity to serve your fresh produce needs. Please remember we have fruit baskets available for the holidays.

Good Morning and Happy Thanksgiving,

Regarding fresh produce as we enter the holidays:
• Recent weather patterns in the growing regions for iceberg lettuce have significantly reduced the supplies for California vegetables such as lettuce, romaine, leaf lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower and celery, causing temporary price increases. Strawberries are also affected.
• Contract pricing for pre-cut products have been pulled causing temporary increases in iceberg salad, chopped romaine, and broccoli and cauliflower florets.
• The markets on onions are stablizing and should remain firm with excellent quality
• Cucumbers and green pepper pricing is also stable due to increased supplies
• Even though tomatoes are not a holiday item, we are presently in a “demand exceeds supply” situation until the Mexican tomatoes harvest in mid December.
• Blueberries, red seedless grapes and blackberries continue to be a great value for color and taste on salad bars and brunch buffets
• If possible, avoid watermelons, cantaloupes, and honeydews as they are out of season and the not as flavorful

If you are too busy to shop and want to simplify gift giving, consider holiday fruit baskets. We have them in all shapes, sizes and price ranges and can ship them anywhere. Call Tom Barkett for more details.

Thanks for your support of local independent businesses. Our employees and their families eat in your restaurants, shop in your stores, and purchase your products. It’s our pleasure to keep our dollars local.

Have a Blessed Thanksgiving!
